Howard Phillips Lovecraft and his written works has inspired the following generations with his dark and twisted tales about madness inducing monsters and bizarre occult activity. From other books to role playing games, and of course movies, we aren’t seeing an end to his mythos dying off anytime soon. And thanks to Izzy Lee’s short film, INNSMOUTH, we get another small peek into the void.
While investigating a bizarre murder, a police detective follows a trail to the town of Innsmouth, a quiet New England town shrouded in secrecy and ran by a powerful family. Taking inspiration from the novella “The Shadow over Innsmouth,” we get a view of a town plagued by gloom.
The limited practical effects. Coming from a mythos filled with tentacled creatures and vicious beasts from the underworld, some Lovecraft inspired projects go balls-to-the-wall crazy when it comes to filling their screen. I appreciate Lee’s ability to give us just a taste of the insanity without making it hokey.
While not a complaint, in the novella, the family’s daughter is a homely creature that one doesn’t want to keep their gaze on for very long at all. Having Tristan Risk as the daughter is as far from that description as possible.
WHY SHOULD YOU SEE INNSMOUTH?:
If you want to be given just enough of a mystery to keep you guessing and craving more, then INNSMOUTH is the perfect short film for you. It has rightfully earned many awards while touring the festival circuit over the past year.
The dialogue is well written and every second bleeds atmosphere. As the detective enters Innsmouth, the oppression and oddity of the town is palpable, despite it appearing mostly normal.
The story is ripe for more. While we just get a small piece, it is obvious that Lee is aching to show us more. And after speaking with her, it is intended to revisit the world in a future feature film.
INNSMOUTH is currently streaming on SHUDDER.
